I’m 76 days away from Moonrising’s publication date, and it feels like it’s all starting to happen! Everyone warns you publishing is slow, but I feel like I’ve been running downhill since the summer of 2023 and all of a sudden I’m sprinting.
Moonrising is a Five Star Read
First, and most importantly, people are starting to read Moonrising—and the ARC reviews are great!
Here’s a few things I’ve heard from early readers via social media:
I started reading a few days ago and LOVING IT
AHHHHHH I absolutely adored Moonrising and everything it stands for! The wonders of science and human exploration and the awe-inspiring vastness of space dovetailed so beautifully with the struggle of finding oneself, learning to accept love, and the challenges of navigating familial dynamics.
I started the book last night & stayed up way too late reading!
Just finished Moonrising yesterday while on vacation. I am not sure if I am sad to go home or sadder because I am out of pages. Really enjoyed all the characters, especially Alex, and look forward to reading more of your work in the future.
SO COOL. It hits different hearing this from people on the internet than it does hearing nice things about my writing from friends and family. (Forever grateful to my friends and family for their support!!)
But it’s still early days! They say you haven’t reached a wide enough audience until you start getting negative reviews. I’m expecting that to come and, honestly, I think I’ll be fine with it. I’ve already written a ton of negative reviews in my head. 😛 This might be famous last words though! We shall see…
Promoting Moonrising is So Fun
I absolutely loved my first long form interview with Lindsey Bryd for her new podcast Lindsey Byrd in Writing is Hard. She asked insightful questions about how I tackle writing about climate activism, working with a sensitivity reader, and how I got my agent. If a 50 minute podcast or YouTube video on writing sounds fun to you (it does to me!), I’d highly recommend a listen. (And if you’re like, thanks, but no thanks on this one, I understand!)
I’m happy with how I sounded in this interview, and it’s exciting to know I’m comfortable talking about my writing on video. Hopefully this will be the first of many live interviews. (Though I do say “um” every two seconds, and I don’t know how to break that verbal tic! Send help!)
I also did my second written interview, this time with Awesome Gang. This is the first of many my marketing team has in store. (I will never not get a kick out of saying “my marketing team.”)
Barnes & Noble Sale
I recently learned from my fellow 2025 debuts that Barnes & Noble is notoriously stingy when it comes to stocking debut authors on their shelves. Much depends on pre-order numbers at Barnes & Noble. So I looked at my sales ranking earlier this week and ::gulp:: it was 1,398,941. 😬 With numbers like that, every pre-order is going to go a long way to improving my sales rank and hopefully see Moonrising on shelves (or, in my dreams, on a table!) at Barnes & Noble.
Luckily, there’s a 25% off sale going on through Friday. If you haven’t pre-ordered Moonrising, please consider ordering from Barnes & Noble this week. Thank you!
Phew
Wow! There is a lot going on. Thank you for all your supportive messages and kind words. I love having such a strong community around me. 💖💖💖
